A wide range of procedures in your chest can be performed during thoracic surgery (thorax). The esophagus, trachea, and other structures may be affected by thoracic surgery in addition to your heart and lungs. Thoracic surgery includes procedures including fixing a heart valve, removing a lung tumor, and fixing a chest aneurysm.
Thoracic surgery can be done open or minimally invasively by a surgeon. A much larger incision is made during open surgery. Surgeons utilize fewer incisions and insert a camera into your chest during minimally invasive surgery.
