Orthopedics, also referred to as orthopedic surgery, is a field of medicine that focuses on the treatment of the skeletal system, which includes the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons, as well as all of its interconnected components. An orthopedic specialist is referred to as an orthopedist. Orthopedists treat musculoskeletal conditions like sports injuries, joint discomfort, and back troubles using surgical and nonsurgical methods.
Orthopedists can be either surgical or noninvasive in nature. In contrast to nonsurgical orthopedists like physiatrists and physical medicine and rehabilitation experts, the former is known as orthopedic surgeons.
